With March being kidney health month, we wanted to educate you more on a common kidney health issue – edema. Edema is the swelling that is caused by water retention in your body’s tissues. This complication can occur when the kidneys are unable to properly process extra fluid in your body.

Your kidneys’ primary role is to filter toxins, water, sodium, and waste from your blood, which is then removed through urine. When your kidneys’ function decreases, they can no longer properly filter and process all the waste/excess fluid in your blood. Therefore, the extra fluid builds up in your tissues causing your body to swell.

Common areas for edema to occur in relation with kidney disease, are the feet, ankles, and lower legs. This type of swelling is very common, and a great way to reduce the swelling in these areas is with compression stockings.

Compression stockings are specialized garments that apply therapeutic pressure to these areas. Compression stockings help to increase circulation and prevent fluid retention in your legs.

Compression stockings offer a long list of benefits, including pain relief, prevention, and enhanced athletic performance. People of all ages and abilities may benefit from wearing compression stockings – especially those who stand, sit or travel for long periods of time, and those with medical conditions such as: diabetes, and kidney disease.

With the assessment and recommendation of a medical professional, you can find out if compression stockings are the right medical device for you. Our LMC Chiropodists are foot care specialists and are able to assess, prescribe and dispense compression stockings. Our compression stockings, unlike those you can buy at a drug store, are specially measured for your needs and are medical grade. We offer a large selection, with many colors, styles and lengths available.
