His family physician referred him to LMC so that he could benefit from a more focused and specialized approach to managing diabetes. With the help of his Endocrinologist Dr. Schlosser and Diabetes Educator Stephanie Varriano, Harbhajan saw a major improvement in his health and his blood sugar levels. “I really like my team of doctors here at LMC; they are very knowledgeable and they know what they are doing. My Diabetes Educator is very professional and friendly; she has helped me keep my blood sugars under control,” Harbhajan said.

A few years back, Harbhajan moved cities and had to leave the LMC clinic. However, he eventually returned to LMC, even though he would be coming from out of town, as he felt he wasn’t receiving the same level of care at other clinics he had visited. He felt that the knowledge and care that he received from his team at LMC provided him with the confidence and skills necessary to best manage his diabetes. Although he now travels out of his way to come to LMC, he believes the trip is worth it as his health is optimal and stable. Harbhajan encourages others to visit a LMC clinic in their area saying, “LMC has so many branches in many cities. I hope other physicians refer their patients to LMC so that they can benefit from the outstanding care as well.”

[/et_pb_text][et_pb_testimonial admin_label=”Testimonial” url_new_window=”off” quote_icon=”off” use_background_color=”off” background_color=”#ffffff” background_layout=”light” text_orientation=”center” use_border_color=”on” border_color=”#a0af28″ border_style=”solid” custom_padding=”20px|20px|0px|20px” border_width=”3″]

“I really like my team of doctors here at LMC; they are very knowledgeable and they know what they are doing. I was very upset -- at the time it was a death sentence, an early death. The only people I knew who had diabetes were older ladies who got sick and died very quickly I didn’t know much about the disease, which made it even scarier. The doctor came into the room and said I needed insulin – at the time (1964) we used a syringe and a big needle – and he inserted the needle into his leg, “See? It’s no big deal.” When I started insulin, it was a lot of trial and error, and I’d check in with my doctor every few weeks to make adjustments.

Why did you decide to come to LMC?
My doctor recommended LMC. She wanted me to see a specialist. In my area at the time, there weren’t any LMC-type clinics available.

What has LMC taught you about diabetes? (E.g. multi-disciplinary approach for care? Pt empowerment leads to better outcomes? Dispelling diabetes myths? Etc.)
A lot! I have done a lot of reading over the years and I thought I knew all about it when I came here. I thought I knew what I had to do, but I didn’t, and most of my learning about the disease has come from the team at LMC. I’ve never felt so welcomed here, and I’ve been made to feel so comfortable.

Has your perspective of diabetes changed since starting at LMC?
I hope to live a lot longer than I thought I would! There are so many opportunities now – it’s so easily managed if you find the right people to help you. All the information available is so different (compared to years ago), even the insulin has improved. I wish I’d gone on the pump a lot sooner. It wasn’t mentioned to me until I came to LMC. I’ve gone from 6 injections a day to changing the infusion set every other day. It’s a lot less work, and before there were a lot of fluctuations in my blood sugars, but now I’ve learned to trust the pump.

What was the biggest obstacle you felt you had to overcome with your DM mgmt? How did LMC support you in this process?
Trusting the people – trusting the healthcare professionals. Before I used to sneak out to the washroom to take the injection. With the pump I don’t bother hiding because I’ve seen people’s attitudes have changed. Diabetes is a lot more accepted now, people don’t have a negative attitude towards it like they used to. Sometimes when I see someone with a pump – and they see me – we smile at each other, and we both know.

Do you think more people living with diabetes should come to LMC? Why?
Definitely, there’s so much knowledge here and people are willing to share it with you.

When you think of diabetes, what words come to mind?
Immediately I think of Illness; life changing; life altering.

When you think of LMC, what words come to mind?
Life changing; a sense of control.

What would you say to someone who feels that their diabetes is controlling their life?
You have to change that. Change your attitude about it – you’re stuck with it, but you can control it. I was used to trying to hide it and ignore it, it was hard to change – I’ve lost jobs and missed opportunities because I am diabetic – but society has also changed. Now I take care of my diabetes.

Has coming to LMC improved your daily mgmt of DM? How?
